Should or Must - "Corpus-based Teaching Material"
Hope you are doing well.I was engaged in desingning corpus-based teaching material last week. As I told you before, this term we are integrating technology into learning materials from a teacher's percpective.I think we should be more careful and work our materials in more detailed.
We were supposed to work in groups of three for this task.So my usual dear partner Serra and new dear partner Nisa and me worked together. First we chose the subject as "should and must" from the course book by MEB for prep students. Our aim was to teach the differences between them and to help studentes explore more examples by using corpus as a tool. We designed our corpus-based teaching material task in Canva, in 4 steps:
1.Check students background knowledge about the subject
We prepared a fill- in - the- gap activity to check whether students know the common usage of " should and must" .
2.Provide students notice authentic examples by using corpus
As a corpus ,we selected Corpusmate and assigned a page to explain how to use Corpusmate so that the students can use it easily by themseves to comprehend the differences between "should and must". After the instruction of Corpusmate page, we designed a table with 4 headings -should / shouldn't/ must / musn't - for the students to write the sentences they found in the corpus. And we, as the teachers ,wrote a sample sentece for each group that we took from the corpus as well.So we provided both students' use and teacher-mediated use of the corpus.
3.Ask students to discover the rules by themselves
Then we created a summary of rules with the activity of fiil- in -the- blanks to discover the rules of the subject and we asked the students to complete the rules and write one example from the corpus for each rule.
4.Provide some new exercises - such as circle- the -correct- option or fill- in- the- blanks - to check to what extend they have learned and finally support them to write their own sentences about the subject.
Before asking them to write their own sentences on the last page, we prepared a choose- the -correct- option activity which aiming for the students to further reinforce what they learned.
Another task we were assigned was to create a lesson plan based on the ASSURE model. The link of it is below as well.
This material design is appropriate especially confusing vocabulary or grammar teaching and learning to explore the differences and similarities among them. Additionally, it provides students use tecnology by themselves which is one of the requirements of 21st century learning . Therefore , the corpus-based teaching material enhance students both language and technology skills. However, we should determine our aim clearly and teach how to use corpus ,before asking them utilize it.
As far as I am concerned, when it is well-organised corpus-based material is highly beneficial for teaching language in terms of analyzing certain grammar rules or puzzling vocabulary It helps students exposure to authentic, real-life languge use.Though, we should ensure that it matches the language ptoficiency of students.Since it may include unfamiliar vocabulary and complex structures. In addition to this, accessing the internet could be another issue.
Overall, we should never forget that technology should be our tool which can only be used when necessary.
